Minutes of the Annual
Meeting
BUSINESS MEETING:
President Mary Kelsey
called the annual meeting of the Friends of Pleasant
Bay to order at
Novata and
the staff of the Wequasett Inn for their
hospitality and
generosity in
hosting the meeting.
Mary moved the
approval of the minutes of the 2006 annual meeting as posted
on the
FOPB website. The motion was seconded and
unanimously approved.
In the absence of
Treasurer Roy Terwilliger, the President
presented the
Treasurer's report
and noted that the report reflects an excellent year
financially for
the Friends with increased contributions, thanks to memorial
gifts and
increased contributions. She also reported
that FOPB made many significant grants and donations,principally to Eelman's
Point Fund and to the school grants program. As
there were no questions, there was a motion for approval followed by a
second and
the treasurer's report was unanimously accepted.
President Kelsey
presented the Nominating Committee report in the absence of
Chairman Judith
Bruce. Mary thanked the outgoing Directors Pamela Herrick
and Kathy
Wesp for work on the School Grants
committee. She also thanked
the
Nominating Committee of Judith Bruce, Bill Coleman, Alan McClennen, Jeff
Norgeot and Carol Odell for
their excellent recruitment of new Directors.
The slate of
Directors for the upcoming year: Bill King was nominated for
re-election to
his second three year term. Elizabeth
Hogan and Tim Macort
were
nominated as new Directors. As there were
no nominations from the
floor, a
motion was made and seconded and unanimously approved to elect all
candidates.
The slate of
Nominating Committee members was then presented: As
Board of
Directors
representatives, Mary Kelsey and Jeff Norgeot;
as at-large
representatives, Bill
Coleman, Alan McClennen and Carol Odell. As there
were no
nominations from the floor the slate was unanimously approved by the
membership.
In the President's
Message, Mary Kelsey highlighted the active year
and
achievements of FOPB. She thanked
the Board for
its talents,
energy and
commitment. Among these achievements this year she mentioned the
new
Membership Brochure and
McClennen;
the excellent Newsletter
edited by Sandy Macfarlane; the
financial
support of FOPB, in cooperation with
to
secure Eelman's Point under the leadership
of Alan McClennen. FOPB
has
cooperated with
other groups to clear waterways under the direction of Jeff
Norgeot and
have contributed to support of environmental groups and local
Bay sailing programs. The competitive School Grants committee
continues to
guide the application process, select grant proposals
and grant awards to
public
schools serving the towns of
The President also
urged the membership and other volunteers to join in Coast Sweep 2007
in September. In closing, Mary
emphasized how much membership financial support furthers the missionof the Friends, and the importance of the
help of volunteers. And finally,Mary again
thanked the Board of Directors for their support, dedication and
creativity. She then introduced Margaret Stenberg, the
incoming President
of the
Friends.
Julie Donnan, Chairman of the School Grants Committee
presented the
2006-2007 report. She introduced the two exhibitor groups that
received
grants this
past year. Paul Niles, Lighthouse Charter
School, had a display
of work
of mapping locations of an aquatic invasive plant species, codium
fragile, in
grader's
project on the concept of a watershed and a "Raindrop's Journey".
The three 2007-2008
awards are to Cassandra Kloumann,
for a
program involving middle school students in science, literature and art;
Kathleen Tringale, Nauset
Regional High School, using
biome for
her students and developing a book for younger children; and Sue
Keohan's third
grade at Orleans Elementary School project including art,
photography and
writing titled "The Bay and I".
After this discussion
it was moved and seconded to adjourn the Business
Meeting.
After a short break,
Mary introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Ivan Valiela.
Dr. Valiela is an internationally known authority on
the coupling of land
and
coastal areas. Dr. Valiela's
latest book, "Global Coastal Change" is a
comprehensive
overview of the environmental factors altering coastal
ecosystems. Among other important issues, he considered
the many powerful
factors
affecting coastal zones and which of those might be most likely to
affect the
shores of
There being no
further business, President Kelsey adjourned the meeting at
