COMPETITIVE GRANTS
ACADEMIC YEAR 2008 – 2009

Purpose:
To promote education, research and public awareness in matters of critical environmental concern to the Towns of Brewster, Chatham, Harwich and Orleans, with special emphasis on the Pleasant Bay estuary and watershed. Grants will be offered in two categories: Science and Humanities (Arts, History, or Literature).
Eligibility:
The competition is open to the teachers of the above disciplines in the public schools serving Brewster, Chatham, Harwich and Orleans.
Grant Period:
The Grants will be for the academic year 2008 – 2009 (i.e. September – June)
Grant Amounts:
$4,000.00 will be available in each of the two categories. Grant applications will be accepted in amounts not to exceed $4,000.00.
Request for Proposals:
The principal of each public school in the four towns is being notified that the competition is open. Applications are included with the notice. The principals are asked to inform the teachers of the availability of the grants.
Deadlines:
Proposals must be submitted by March 1, 2008. The name and address of the contact person for FOPB appears on the application. The Grant recipients will be announced on or about April 1, 2008. The selection of the recipients will be made by the Grant Committee of the FOPB with the approval of the Board of Directors of the FOPB.
Conditions:
The grants may be used for teacher training, hardware, other equipment, student field work, or any activity which addresses the stated Purpose. Each application will show the signature of the school principal indicating that the proposal is consistent with school policy.
Recipients will submit written reports of their
progress by
January 1, 2009 for publication in the FOPB Newsletter.
At the teacher’s convenience, members of the
FOPB would like to visit a field study of Pleasant Bay during the
academic
year. In addition, the recipients will
be invited to attend the annual meeting in July, or a similar meeting,
to
address the results of their work and present their final report.
