TED KEON, DIRECTOR OF DEPT. OF COASTAL RESOURCES/CHATHAM FEATURED AT JULY 17 ANNUAL MEETING OF PLEASANT BAY!

The 22nd Annual Meeting of the Friends of Pleasant Bay will take place on Thursday, July 17, at 7pm at the Wequassett Inn on Route 28 in East Harwich.  The Friends’ membership has observed and experienced the development of the new Chatham Inlet since April of 2007, as the January 1987 breach and the new inlet opposite Minister’s Point fight for domination of the Pleasant Bay-Chatham Harbor system.  Keynote speaker Ted Keon, Director of the Coastal Resources Department in Chatham, has been continually involved with the physical changes and significant repercussions of the new inlet over the last year.  He will discuss the present and potential future ramifications of this inlet for all those who use the Bay.  His talk will focus on the impacts of the new inlet on the outer beach and mainland, changes in water levels and tides, future issues of concern, and other items of potential interest to the audience.  Mr. Keon’s talk will be complemented with the most up-to-date visuals available.

As Director of the Coastal Resources Department with the Town of Chatham, Ted Keon is the primary liaison for Chatham’s marine and shoreline related activities.  He oversees the planning and implementation of projects affecting Chatham’s waterways, coastal shorelines and water dependent infrastructure and also provides oversight of Chatham’s Town Landings and water access.

Prior to his position with Chatham, Mr. Keon was the Chief of the Coastal Planning Section of the Philadelphia District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  During his tenure with the Corps, he was actively involved in the planning and development of numerous shore protection, navigation and other coastal related projects along the coasts of New Jersey, Delaware and Delaware Bay.  He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physical Geography from the University of Delaware and Arizona State University.

During the Annual Meeting, the following schools and teachers, recipients of the Friends of Pleasant Bay Competitive School Grants for 2007-2008, will display their accomplishments with present free-standing displays:

·        Sue Keohan, Orleans Elementary School

·        Cassandra Kloumann, Chatham Middle School

·        Kathleen Tringale, Nauset Regional High School.

The mission of the Friends of Pleasant Bay, founded in 1985 as a not-for-profit organization, is to promote education, research and public awareness of the area as one of critical environmental concern, to preserve open space and retain the visual quality of the area, to ensure habitat protection of the rich biological diversity and productivity of the Bay, to retain and enhance public access to the shoreline and to preserve natural and historic sites.

The 22nd Annual Meeting of the Friends of Pleasant Bay on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 7:00 PM is open to the public free of charge.  Refreshments will be served.  The event will take place at the Wequassett Inn on Route 28 in East Harwich.
